Believe it or not, politics, yes even the offensive kind, need to be in your leadership tool kit.
Most people have a negative association and outright aversion to politics in the workplace. Much of this comes from the negatives that arise from politics in the government sphere which we are all reminded of daily in the news media. The word Politics, though, which is of Greek origin, literally means the process of making decisions applying to all members of each group and finding ways to build strength in this area is essential to any leadership path.
In this session we will explore three fundamental power themes — The Mindset, Skillset and Experience Set — for navigating politics in the workplace with two individuals who have had extensive experience navigating the political landscape at the highest levels of global companies, governments and leading international non-profits.
About our Speakers:
Cari E. Guittard is a founding Principal at Global Engagement Partners (GEP), a Senior Associate with the Gender Intelligence Group and teaches graduate courses for the Hult International Business School in Women’s Leadership & Gender Intelligence, Negotiations and Corporate Diplomacy & Geopolitical Risk. She has served in senior positions at the U.S. Department of State, working on a variety of portfolios ranging from public diplomacy and public affairs to cyber security, counter-terrorism, and political military affairs. Cari has served as a spokesman, media representative, and law enforcement liaison and trainer for cyber threats and critical infrastructure initiatives, as well as advised senior officials of foreign governments, national and global non-profits, and corporations. She has extensive experience in the Middle East, Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. She needs appeared in numerous media and radio outlets to include The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, Fox News, and the BBC.
Charlotte Beers is an American businesswoman and former Under Secretary of State. She was the first female vice-president at the JWT advertising firm, then CEO of Tatham-Laird & Kudner until 1992, and finally CEO of Ogilvy & Mather until 1996. In 1997, Fortune magazine placed her on the cover of their first issue to feature the most powerful women in America, for her achievements in the advertising industry. In 1999, Beers received the “Legend in Leadership Award” from the Chief Executive Leadership Institute of the Yale School of Management. From October 2001 until March 2003, she worked for the Bush Administration as the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
